Moot Court Society Annual Report (2018 - 2019)

Dr. Priya Dhanokar, Assistant Professor, DES SNFLC

Mooting is an excellent way to develop legal research, analysis and presentation, both oral and written, and knowledge of core areas of law, all of which are crucial for legal practice. Moot court not only helps in enhancing legal knowledge, but also in brushing up communication, drafting, legal research, and presentation skills. After presenting moots, students get a taste of real court proceedings. Thus, being one of the prominent law colleges in the city, we considerMoot Court activity in general and Moot Court competitions in particular as the most significant co-curricular activity. Every year, the college constitutes a Moot Court Society (MCS) and this year, it was constituted of 70 students including 14 nominated members and Dr. PriyaDhanokarasthe Faculty In-charge.

The endeavor for constitution of Moot Court Society began with organization of Intra College Moot Court Competition. As many as 135 aspiring students participated in it. The selection of the members of Moot Court Society was based on two rounds, Round –I (Oral Presentations), which was conducted on 28th July, 2018 and Round – II (Written Test), conducted on 1stAugust, 2018. The college also arranged Orientation Session on 12th July, 2018 wherein, alumni of our college, Adv. Anurag Mishra guided all the aspiring students in order to prepare for the said competition. The members of Moot Court Society participated in various International, National and State Level competitions and had a splendid success in all. Another significant endeavor of the Moot Court Society is the hosting of LokmanyaTilak National Appellate Moot Court Competition.

Lokmanya Tilak National Appellate Moot Court Competition

Carrying forward its legacy of last 10 years, the Moot Court Society of the college organized the 11th edition of LokmanyaTilak National Appellate Moot Court Competition on 22ndand 23rd February, 2019. The unique selling point of our competition is of being the only Appellate Moot Court Competition, in which, unlike any other moot court competition the problem is based on an actual Trial Court case. Ours is a unique style of mooting format at Appellate Level in both Civil and Criminal domains involving real life cases and arguments which expose the participants to a range of soft skills, which a professional practitioner is supposed to imbibe for his/her successful career.

This year, it was 11thedition of the LokmanyaTilak National Appellate Moot Court Competition and was inaugurated by the Chief Guest, Shri. Shriniwas Agrawal, Principal District and Sessions Judge, Pune. Guest of Honourfor this inaugural session was, Dr. Sharad Kunte, Chairman, Deccan Education Society, Pune. The participants were provided with a problem for this competition was based on real civil case. By making necessary changes, Civil Paper-book was prepared by the members of MCS and provided to the participants for the arguments.

The preliminary round advanced for the whole day. The result for the teams qualifying for the Semi-Final round was announced in the evening, which was followed by a feedback session from all the judges to the participants.
