VISIT TO THE BOMBAY HIGH COURT

On the 19th of September 2024, we embarked on a remarkable journey to visit the esteemed Bombay High Court, an institution established in 1862, and one of the most venerable and distinguished courts in India. This august court exercises its profound jurisdiction over Maharashtra, Goa, and several union territories, handling an array of civil and criminal cases, with particular emphasis on constitutional matters and appeals from lower courts. The anticipation of experiencing the grandeur of such a revered judicial body filled our hearts as we departed from Pune railway station, eager to immerse ourselves in the hallowed halls where justice is dispensed with wisdom and impartiality. Our journey began on a delightful note, as we were graciously provided with a sumptuous breakfast courtesy of the college. A medley of traditional Indian delicacies, carefully curated to cater to our tastes, energized us for the day ahead. The excitement among the group was palpable, and before we knew it, we had arrived at the magnificent Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, a marvel in itself, representing the fusion of Victorian and Indian architecture. Brimming with enthusiasm, we eagerly commenced our walk to the much-awaited destination—the illustrious Bombay High Court. Along the way, we paused to capture this memorable moment in a photograph, a tangible keepsake of what promised to be an unforgettable experience.

Upon arriving at the Bombay High Court, our formalities and due diligence were swiftly completed. Soon after, we had the honor of being introduced to a senior lawyer, a distinguished alumnus of our very own college, who graciously shared with us the storied legacy of this legal sanctuary. His words painted a vivid portrait of the court’s glorious past, igniting in us a sense of awe and respect for the institution we were about to explore. He also imparted invaluable guidance on how to make the most of our educational visit, advising us to observe with keen eyes and an open mind as we delved into the intricacies of legal proceedings. Thus began our enlightening and productive excursion. We were divided into smaller groups of fifteen, each assigned to observe various courtrooms. However, it was Room Number 226 that truly captivated our attention. This courtroom, presided over by none other than the Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court, stood as a testament to both authority and architectural brilliance. The grandeur of the room, adorned with exquisite Victorian Gothic elements, was nothing short of awe- inspiring. It was in this majestic setting that we witnessed the delicate balance of the scales of justice in action, a reminder of the immense responsibility carried by those who uphold the law. Amidst our observations, we took short breaks to explore other facets of the court’s rich offerings. One of the most enlightening experiences was our visit to the Judges' Library. Here, the head librarian personally guided us through a treasure trove of archival books and historical documents, each one a piece of history in its own right. We marveled at the collection, which not only housed physical records but also provided us with the tools to access a vast array of legal resources and bare acts online through the court’s official website—an invaluable resource for any aspiring legal professional. Our journey of discovery continued as we visited the Bombay High Court Museum, inaugurated in 2015. This museum offered a rare glimpse into the historical timeline of this prestigious institution, showcasing documents, artifacts, and memorabilia that told the story of its evolution. The museum painted a vivid picture of the profound influence the Bombay High Court has had on shaping the legal landscape of India, a legacy that has endured for over a century and a half.

One of the most significant moments of our visit was our audience with Justice Manjusha Deshpande, a figure of grace and wisdom. In our conversation with her, she shared insights into her experiences within the judiciary, and we discussed topics ranging from service matters to future opportunities in law. Her candor and encouragement were both inspiring and motivating, leaving an indelible impression on all of us. We were also fortunate to meet another learned judge, whose words of advice added further depth and perspective to our understanding of the legal profession. Our exploration did not end there. We proceeded to the Bombay Bar Association, where we were immersed in the vibrant culture of legal networking. The association’s rich history and its role in nurturing some of India’s finest legal minds left us in awe. Additionally, our visit to the Consumer Court allowed us to witness the practical workings of a specialized court, further broadening our knowledge of the diverse facets of law. As the day drew to a close, we reluctantly began our journey back to the station. Our hearts were full of the incredible memories we had made, and we eagerly reflected on the wealth of knowledge and experience we had gained. To cap off our extraordinary day, we were once again treated to a delightful meal—this time, a delectable continental spread that perfectly complemented the end of our educational adventure. Thus, with full hearts and fuller minds, we returned to Pune, forever enriched by this phenomenal experience at the Bombay High Court. The lessons learned, the connections made, and the inspiration drawn from this journey will undoubtedly shape our futures in the field of law, as we aspire to contribute to the noble pursuit of justice in our own ways.
